The effect of sediment deposition on gastropod fecal content

چکیده

The anthropogenic deposition of sediment on previously undisturbed areas has a profound effect on species diversity and density. This is particularly true in the remarkably clear and productive Lake Tanganyika. The effects of sediment in Lake Tanganyika have been seen for fish, molluscs and ostracods (Alin et al. 1999; Cohen 1993). The Lake Tanganyika Biodiversity Project identified excess sedimentation of the littoral habitat as “a severe threat “to the diversity of Tanganyikan mollusks (Patterson & Mankin 1998). In addition to their ecological importance, the Tanganyikan gastropods have extrinsic value as models for coevolution and sympatritic speciation.

Sediment microbiomes associated with critical habitat of the Juvenile American Horseshoe Crab; Limulus polyphemus

Plumb Beach, Brooklyn, New York in USA is an important horseshoe crab breeding and nursery ground that has experienced substantial anthropogenic influence, including pollution, erosion and subsequent restoration. Since little is known about the relationship between sediment microbial communities and juvenile horseshoe crab survival, next generation sequencing was used to characterize and compar...

Effect of Sediment Particle Size and Temperature on Fecal Bacteria Mortality Rates and the Fecal Coliform/Fecal Streptococci Ratio

Extended survival of fecal bacteria in sediment can obscure the source and extent of fecal contamination in agricultural settings. The variability in fecal coliform/fecal streptococci (FC/FS) ratios with time and discrepancies between observable fecal sources and measured FC/ FS ratios in shallow surface water from agricultural watersheds may be explained by examining FC and FS mortality rates ...
